Welcome to the Empowering ESOL Online In service!

Successful completion of the workshop will meet the training requirements for mathematics, science, social studies and computer literacy teachers. It is also the first component of the required training for self-contained elementary classroom teachers and language arts teachers working toward the ESOL Endorsement. The workshop is also open to other instructional, non-instructional, and administrative personnel on a space available basis, although it exceeds the training requirements for these groups.

This workshop consists of three parts: two group meetings, a series of on-line activities, and a case study. In the on-line activities, you will follow directions to complete assignments and exercises, alone or with a group. You will be directed to specific sections of a resource file to study various documents and be given assignments to complete related to those documents. You will send completed tasks to your facilitator by e-mail or submit via online forms.

Although this online course is designed as a 60-hour in service, please be aware that online courses may require more time than traditional classes. In addition, this course involves a great deal of reading, much of which can be done in "jigsaws." Try to establish a cooperative group for the jigsaws at the initial meeting. These groups may collaborate via e-mail or face-to-face meetings.

You should review the Course Requirements, Cooperative Learning Strategies, ESOL Strategies, and the Glossary before attempting the activities. You will also need to refer to these documents during the activities.

Please follow the instructions given in this document. If you do not understand an instruction, you may contact your facilitator by email or phone for clarification.

Upon successful completion of all assigned tasks,
you will be awarded 60 inservice points.
