Case Study  

The Course Overview contains a specific list of all assignments by section with the product required for each section. You may wish to print a copy of this for use as a guideline. In addition to the documents listed with each section, Data on Eliana Martinez, XHO4 may also provide a useful sample of a case study for your review. Please be aware that you may not have all the data included in this sample and that you may have some data not included.

Key to Document Numbering:  The Roman Numeral designates the section, e.g., III is for Section III.  HO stands for Handout and the Arabic number following is the handout number, e.g., HO6 is Handout 6.  So VHO13 would be handout 13 from section 5.

Section III
Need: Documents IIIHO6, IIIHO7 and IIIHO8
IIIHO7 - Part A - Developing a plan 1. Prepare a list of specific questions and/of information that would be helpful in working with students in your classroom, focusing on your case study student. You may refer to IIIHO6 to get ideas of types of questions/information. Do NOT just copy this list of questions. Product: List of questions/bits of information 2. Prepare a detailed plan of how you will gather each bit of information. Your questions/information may be organized by the method of gathering the information. Product: Detailed plan for obtaining the information.

IIIHO7 - Part B - Developing teaching opportunities for everyday routines 1. Select three routines from IIIHO8 (or you may choose others if appropriate). 2. Prepare a written description comparing and contrasting how these routines are carried out in your school and the student's native culture (Culture Capsule). 3. Develop a plan detailing how you could help your student learn and understand how each of the three routines is carried out in your school. Product: Written plan to help student learn each routine.

Section IV
Need: IVHO3, IVHO7 and the information gathered using plan developed as described in IIIHO7, Part A. 
Using the directions in IVHO7 and the information gathered, develop a mini-ethnography for your student. Product: Data collected and mini-ethnography

Section V
Need: VHO13 
Using directions on VHO13, collect an oral language sample from your student. Product: Audio or video tape

Section VI
Need: Audio/video tape collected in Section V and VIHO11, VIHO12, VIHO13 (NOTE: Do NOT attempt this assignment until you have been trained using the SOLOM which will be done at one of the group meetings.) 

  1. Rate the student's oral language proficiency using VIHO12, SOLOM Teacher Observation Scale. Product: Completed SOLOM scale 
  2. Prepare a one-paragraph summary of the student's oral language proficiency. Product: Written summary. 
  3. Select four activities from VIHO13 which would address the student's weak areas and justify these selections in writing. Product: List of four activities and written justification.

Section VII 
Need: VIIHO15 
Use the questionnaire included in VIIHO15 to collect literacy data on your student. Product: Completed questionnaire

Section VIII
Need: VIIIHO18, VIIIHO19, VIIIHO20 
Using the questions and format in VIIIHO18, prepare a lesson plan for your student. You will have already done parts of a lesson plan in earlier activities. Modify this plan as needed for this activity. The lesson plan should take into consideration all you have learned about the most effective ways to teach LEP students and other concepts considered throughout the course. VIIIHO19 and VIIIHO20 are examples that you may consider. A written justification of the instructional decisions made in preparing the lesson play will be included. Product: Completed lesson plan and written justification.

Section IX
Need: IXHO20, IXHO21 

  1. Selection one of the options listed on IXHO20.
  2. Follow directions for completing the assessment option selected.
Product: 
Option 1: Copy of original test, competed teacher-made checklist, revised test. 
Option 2: Copy of instrument developed and summary of results of implementation. 
Option 3: Outline of portfolio design containing the items listed in IXHO20.

Section 6: Application of the SOLOM to Case Study Student 1. Completed SOLOM scale
2. Written summary of student’s oral language proficiency.
Section 6: Selecting Appropriate Language Learning Activities 1. List of four activities
2. Written justification for selecting each activity.
Section 7: Collecting Literacy Data Completed questionnaire on literacy data for student
Section 8: Creating a Lesson for Case Study Student Completed lesson plan and written justification
Section 9: Creating Assessment Option for Case Study Student Completed assessment option
